Markets in Everything: Think Tanks

Why buy votes when you can buy the Bay Area Center for Voting Research? The BACVR analyzes voting trends in California and nationwide; they are best known for their ranking of the most liberal and most conservative cities (pdf) in the nation. The founders, however, want out and are selling all of BACVR's intellectual assets, including the organization's web site, past research, and well-known name on eBay. The perfect Christmas gift for that political junkie on your list.

Of course some people believe that all think tanks are for sale.

Any think tank that goes partisan loses the value of neutrality. That's the fear about the WSJ. This sale is about market intelligence, not biased reports. (If we could ban gerrymandering, its value would plummet!)

What? Madison, Wisconsin is not on the liberal list,
and there are no entries on the conservative list from
either Idaho or Wyoming, the next most Republican states
after Utah?

Madison is in the complete report, Berkley. It ranked around 27th most liberal IIRC. Boise ranked in the mid-50's conservative I think. The study was of cities above 100,000 population only.

BTW, I thought it was cute of the authors of the report to list the city of San Buenaventura. Probably most of the residents don't even know that is its official name. Ventura is what appears on the signs and the city stationery. If the shorter and generally used form wasn't good enough for Ventura, I wonder why it was for El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula. *lol*

let’s step back and very briefly look at the web versus traditional software. With traditional software, you would go

through various design phases starting from specifications, to architecture documentation, to development, to usability

testing, to testing, and eventually to ship. The entire approach had a fairly long lead time (up to years). Once released,

release cycles.
