Assorted links

1. James Flynn on IQ, at Cato Unbound.

2. My favorite things Swiss; several Swiss asked me to repost this, I can report the list hasn't changed much in the last year.  Zurich is wonderful on Mondays.

3. When asked, I will report.  My favorite blog post (of mine that is, and as distinct from the notion of best) is "Luring Alex to Lunch".

I liked the Cato piece, and can't really disagree with it in the larger sense, but he does contradict himself.

He downplays the huge gains in overall IQ scores as being not quite valid, and then uses the huge gains in overall IQ scores to validate the environmental influence side of the IQ argument.

Of course where there's smoke, there's fire, and either the majority of IQ tests are testing acquired skills and thus not pure g or there is more to the nurture side of IQ than objective studies have shown so far.

As his own writing shows, at least in brief, it seems to be the former in that IQ tests are not quite capturing the real g but perhaps only parts of it.

"When asked, I will report."

Might I ask for a "Best of Chicago or Illinois"? (I'm taking my first trip there soon.)

Savvy essay, but his comments back in July were more fun to read.

My review of Flynn's book, which Flynn quite liked, is here:

"Luring Alex to Lunch" is my favorite piece. I re-read it often and also give it to my students. So they can really learn supply and demand, plus understand academia.

Jason Malloy's recent post at GNXP (here) is apropos here, I think. The Flynn effect and its relationship to g and IQ are discussed.
