Famous Economists Quiz

The Jeopardy contestants didn't do very well but here is your chance.  Robert Whaples has created a quick quiz for his students on famous economists.   I expect most MR readers will get all the answers right but fortunately the quiz is timed.  I answered all questions correctly in 49 seconds.  Go for it!

Didn't know who Veblen was

Posted by: Veblen at Nov 4, 2009 8:29:09 AM

10 of 10, but had only 2:02 left. A very poor showing.

Posted by: Apep at Nov 4, 2009 8:33:37 AM

took me 1:16 because I could not remember how to spell Schumpeter.

Posted by: chris at Nov 4, 2009 8:33:43 AM

Took me 42 seconds.

Thank goodness for my history of economic thought class.

Posted by: Lance at Nov 4, 2009 8:41:46 AM

45 seconds. I beat Tyler at something. My life is now complete.

Posted by: Rob at Nov 4, 2009 9:04:53 AM

Oops. Didn't even notice. It was Alex. Life still complete.

Posted by: Rob at Nov 4, 2009 9:05:52 AM

Rob, hate to break it to you, but it was Alex you beat.

Posted by: Joe at Nov 4, 2009 9:13:55 AM

I only got 4. I would guess I am far more typical of the average MR reader than Alex thinks

Posted by: Dave at Nov 4, 2009 9:29:18 AM

Misspelled Walras (Walrus!) and Veblen, burned time.

Posted by: Mo at Nov 4, 2009 9:45:16 AM

Took me a while to recall Walras, which ran me up to 73 seconds.

Posted by: Mike Giberson at Nov 4, 2009 9:52:16 AM

Curses... exactly tied Alex.

Posted by: James at Nov 4, 2009 9:53:17 AM

Blocked at work! I suppose I could write a couple sentences in a report in the one minute I would have wasted. Or maybe I'm not supposed to know anything about famous economists in my job. I'll try the quiz when I get back home.

Posted by: Ed at Nov 4, 2009 10:06:51 AM

I got 6 right. At least I beat Dave. Dave is an idiot.

> I expect most MR readers will get all the answers right

Well damn. I got 4: Smith, Malthus, Friedman and Keynes. I've heard of Ricardo, Becker and Schumpeter but could not correctly place them, and haven't heard of the rest.

Is your estimation of MR readers too high, am I subpar, or were you just signalling by saying that? Not sure.

Posted by: Bill Mill at Nov 4, 2009 11:07:23 AM

Damn you Becker!

Posted by: salacious at Nov 4, 2009 11:14:45 AM

I knew the answers to 8/10 but I cannot spell at all so I pretty much failed.

Posted by: Robert S. Porter at Nov 4, 2009 12:11:14 PM

I got 9/10, could not remember Schumpeter. But then, I've never taken an economics class in my life, so I don't feel too bad about it =)

Posted by: Blackadder at Nov 4, 2009 12:24:32 PM

1:35, but I had to go back and correct things--I started by typing in the full name, but the thing was set for last names only. "Adam Smith" led to an incorrect answer, for example, when "Smith" was the correct answer. Sheesh.

Took 71 seconds to get them all. I believe, were it not for spelling errors, I would have been just at 1 minute.

Just curious, did anyone here just Google the book titles? Seems like if one wanted to cheat, 3:00 would be plenty of time to do it. Then again, if you did I guess there's no incentive to reveal that information here.

Posted by: Norman Maynard at Nov 4, 2009 1:15:39 PM

Only had 5 out of 10. Though I should've gotten Schumpeter and Becker. :(

Posted by: Robert Olson at Nov 4, 2009 1:21:08 PM

I only got four right. As a former WFU economics undergraduate...sorry Professor Whaples.

Posted by: Mr. Winston at Nov 4, 2009 2:16:18 PM

After Smith, Ricardo and Schumpeter I saw no reason to continue.

Posted by: Andrew at Nov 4, 2009 2:23:06 PM

9/10, blanked out on Marshall, my excuse is I'm a undergraduate who hasn't taken history of thought yet

Posted by: John Doe at Nov 4, 2009 2:55:38 PM

10/10, 1:49 but probably burned 30 seconds in understanding where to type the answers. My hesitations were on Walras and Veblen. I kept thinking "Weber?" Webern?" Just a block.

Posted by: bob mcmanus at Nov 4, 2009 3:07:36 PM

I didn't know Walras or Becker. Although my knowledge of economics isn't very complete, since I've never taken a course or even looked at a textbook =\.
