The Federal Reserve now has commercials
Really. View it here. This one is even better. Here is the Fed on risk protection. And here: "The Greatest Risk is Not Taking One." Here is Fed Karaoke.

So, should I buy a bunch of AIG stock tomorrow as soon as the market opens and then sell it a few hours later?

Good thing the Fed was there so AIG didn't outlive its money!

Any chance this will make the socialist lefties realize their mantra that we live in a "free market society" is as real as flying pink elephants?
Posted by: Jay at Sep 16, 2008 11:13:39 PM
BTW, I think Bill Gross should be thrown in jail.
Posted by: Jay at Sep 16, 2008 11:14:13 PM
But those are all commercials for AIG--OH WAIT!

What? Why? Rent seeking is government approved activity. Oil companies profiting from their business, on the other hand, makes them enemies of the people.
Any chance this will make the socialist lefties realize their mantra that we live in a "free market society" is as real as flying pink elephants?
Well, Obama just blamed all this on GWB's "laissez-faire, free market" policies. When you stop laughing, tell me if you think it's more likely the lefties will realize we have a model more closely resembling eurosocialism or a flying pink elephant crashes through your window. Make sure you're not sitting too close to your window.

Republicans have poisoned the libertarian brand.

Hilarious.
As a midwesterner, I'm now proud of our sober, risk adverse banks.

Well, it looks like the Fed has become the new Gosplan. Capitalism was nice while it lasted.

1. Free markets are the source of all problems.
2. Society has problems.
Therefore:
3. We live in a free market society.
Republicans have poisoned the libertarian brand.
Republicans, in order not to be branded "Laissez-faire", have implemented the most socialist policies since the New Deal. But now the Democrats, in order to save face, have to become even more extreme socialists than the Republicans.

Who is President? Who is bailing out these companies? Who is the socialist?

Don't forget that the Fed also gets to put its logo on the uniforms of Manchester United!!
Posted by: DRDR at Sep 17, 2008 3:51:07 AM
What is magic about this 79.9% equity?
Anywhoo, the Fed needs a slogan, I propose;
"The Fed: As good as gold, only better."
or
"The Fed: Half the time, we got your back every time. Security you can trust. Maybe. Don't tell noone."
"The Fed: The only moral hazard is not having one."
"We do our best, so you can do your worst."
"Who ensures your insurer? The Fed."
"Where would you be without us? We aren't telling."

Andrew, those are excellent.
More! More! More!

Andrew, add one inspired by AIG:
"The Fed: Never outlive our money."
Posted by: fish on a bicycle at Sep 17, 2008 6:23:38 AM
"Together, we are all too big to fail. Come join us and be Fed!"
Posted by: Andrew at Sep 17, 2008 7:17:04 AM
"When your building is on fire, call me, I have a helicopter - Ben"
"The Fed: Leading us out of the chaos and into the singularity"
"When it comes to bail-outs, noone has bigger buckets - Big Bucket Ben"
Marginal Economedy...Don't encourage me.

It's not AIG, but somehow this classic dot-com era Super Bowl commercial seems appropriate. "We just wasted $2 trillion. What are you doing with your money? Oops, that was your money."
Posted by: at Sep 17, 2008 8:19:41 AM
andrew, please continue. i just LOLed.
Posted by: pants at Sep 17, 2008 9:05:07 AM
"Yes, The Fed Can!"
"The Fed - you can bank on us."
"The Fed - Leno will run out of jokes before we run out of money."
Commercial:
(Oops, I did it again playing in the background)
Assistant: Ummm, miss Spears, The Fed is on the phone, he's asking for money. He needs another bailout.
Naked Britney: Which one? You know I don't want to talk to that irresponsible SOB.
Assistant: No, it's the other one.
Naked Britney: Oh, okya, but tell him just this one more time.
Posted by: Andrew at Sep 17, 2008 9:29:22 AM
that was glorious

"Republicans have poisoned the libertarian brand."
Libertarians poisoned themselves by aligning with Repubs. Really you didn't see this coming ? How about you practice a bit of what you preach and take responsibility for your misery.

Of course this one is fine

And most of the others there have some bearing.

Saturday Night Live needs to make a skit about nerdy, ivory-tower Federal Reserve bankers trying to make
insurance company commercials or sell homes that they need to liquidate.
Would anybody actually "get" them though?

I love Republian Free Market Zealots.
We are not seeing the culmination of Republican Free Market policies coming home to roost. No regulation so we can steal everything thats not nailed down style, just like enron in the deregulated energy markets in California.
Well - Georgie and his GOP clown posse ran on smaller government right? Profits are private for these guys, but losses are to be shared by all (downside risks socialized).
What fools.
