My five guiltiest iTunes pleasures

I have been tagged.  They're probably all songs by Gilbert O'Sullivan but if you wish to diversify, well...should I feel guilty about Split Enz "I Hope I Never," Harry Nilsson's "Cuddly Toy," early Beach Boys songs, or Liz Phair's "Whip-Smart"?  How about "Wooly Bully", by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs?  Is Paul Simon's "American Tune" noble or too sappy?  Upon reflection I don't feel guilty about any of it.  I haven't felt guilty about Abba for a long time though Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan may soon change that.

"American Tune" is totally cool, but anyone knows "Exile in Guyville" is WAY better than "Whip-Smart"! :o)

As I said in the original Balko blog, I have 4 different albums of the musical Chess.

I hope I never is a great Split Enz tune.. don't feel ashamed of that one

You shouldn't feel guilty about Nilsson. He's a legend and a criminally underrated songwriter.

Aren't you supposed to tag some people now?

Posted by: David at Jul 21, 2008 9:25:52 PM

I'll tag Steve Sailer, Paul Krugman, and Roissy.

Abba? Really???

According to the best movie critic around, Pierce Brosnan and Muriel Strepsil triumph through the embarrassment. See Mark Kermode at http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/videos/kermode_reviews.shtml and watch the Mamma Mia review. It is brilliant.

American Tune is a beautiful piece. But you should note that the tune and some of the lyric is substantially lifted from an old Christian hymn... the name of which escapes me just now.

Liz Phair's song Flower is my guilty pleasure.

I also have a hard time explaining my extensive collection of GWAR CDs.

tegan and sara shouldn't be a guilty pleasure aaron!

limp bizkit's 'my way' should be, and is mine...

abba doesn't seem bad to me, but they seem like
a standard 'cheesy band' like carrot top is a
standard 'cheesy comedian' or christianity a standard
'cheesy religion'. they're vocally dissed but it seems
more a convention, like saying 'god bless you', than an actual belief.

How are you getting Gilbert O'sullivan music on iTunes? Last I looked there is only one of his albums on there and it is from 2006. In order to get Alone Again(naturally) you have to buy the soundtrack to the Virgin Suicides. Are you using a different service?

Guilty for a ( left)economist dream?
On not enough saving:
I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay
Ain't it sad
And still there never seems to be a single penny left for me
On incomes gap:
Always sunny
In the rich man's world
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
It's a rich man's world
On prefeminist world:( or evolutive phsycology):
In my dreams I have a plan
If I got me a wealthy man
I wouldn't have to work at all
On oportunity cost:
A man like that is hard to find but I can't get him off my mind
Ain't it sad
And if he happens to be free I bet he wouldn't fancy me
That's too bad

Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia? Somewhere Daniel Craig must be laughing his @$$ off.

Welcome to the generation gap, never heard of any of them. I've heard the song Wooly Bully... once? In a commercial? Sad to see classics end that way, makes me wonder what will happen to the music of my day 30 years from now.

Just listen to Eva Cassidy singing American Tune. I start to see many songs she remaked in a new way. I used to think for example Time after time by Cindy Lauper was some silly song until Eva Cassidy performance of it.

Regarding Abba, think they have a great musician --Björn Ulvaeus-- coming from a jazz band. Something similar to Sting's affair with The Police. Easy pop but good quality anyway.
