The best sentence I read yesterday

Psychoanalysis is about what two people can say to each other if they agree not to have sex.

That is from Adam Phillips, in the new book Intimacies.

Bersani and Phillips call for a new form of intimacy which they term “impersonal narcissism”

From the descriptions at the Amazon.com page, this sounds like a candidate for your "why you should throw books out" theory.

That one is good. It could have seen that in a Woody Allen film from 1986 or something like that...

Thank you, but I have seen my fill of this already.

. . . and yet the intimacy of psychoanalysis so often LEADS to sex; having been affiliated with a psychoanalytic institute, the stories of sex with patients I gathered would curl ordinary people's hair. The analysts all know it. And they keep it a secret!

They are just talking sh*t in an attempt to bore the other person into taking his/her clothes off -- and getting to a REAL topic :)
