The Economist has a new travel blog, the new Fuchsia Dunlop book is only "good," the first issue of Reason magazine under new editor Matt Welch is out (so far I like it; it's less cultural, less left-wing and more current affairsy than before), finally I am into Wilco, Vishnu's Crowded Temple is an interesting account of the blend between Indian politics and religion, Arthur Brooks's Gross National Happiness argues that the traditional conservative recipe makes people happy, Ramon Llull is a much underrated medieval thinker, here's a blog on giving away your rebate, and here's Ryan Holiday on how to master what you read; his technique is the opposite of mine which is simply to read and move on.  And here is why congestion pricing died in New York.

Wilco now rubs me the wrong way. It comes off as pretentious. But I used to be a huge fan.

Tyler, you seem to have been in too much of a hurry when you put this post together. Or maybe you're saying your ethnic dining guide is the key to happiness. Maybe it is.

wilco: another band that i don't like, or even quite want to like...I think I just want to want to like them.

This is News and Views, here's my two cents, gang...If you only see one film the rest of your life it should be "Mickey Blue Eyes". When it comes to window blinds, vertical blinds are terrific, but so are horizontal blinds. Has anybody ever died of a heart attack? I mean, really? I don't care what anyone says, in my book, Ted Kaczynski is not the Unabomber. Sudden thought: When did sugar diabetes become plain old diabetes? Of all of the figures of the 20th Century one of the greatest has to be Robert Urich. I have no tolerance, gang, for anyone who commits arson. World Series prediction, it will be the Diamondbacks in 4. The more I think about it, the more I appreciate the equator. I don't ever remember seeing a Mormon, not once, not ever. Is it just me, or is anyone else sick and tired of Nelson Mandela? Here's the dirty truth, gang, Poland spring water does not come from Poland. I interviewed Chile's imprisoned dictator General Pinochet last week, and take it from me, guys, this fella has a terrific laugh. Does anybody remember baseball cards? Between Hurricane Hugo and Hurricane Andrew, nothing beats Hurricane Hugo. My wish for the new millennium is that we see a lot more of John Larroquette. Family update, folks: Holding my baby son, Chance King makes me realize how much more I love him than my other children.

Fuchsia Dunlop's memoir is much better than good. It might even put some bones on Tyler Cowen's (I thought) bizarre suggestion in "Discover your inner economist" that you go into a restaurant and say "I know Chengdu" (I would assume this would lead to the opportunity to reminisce about Chengdu, which would probably not be very fruitful). Anyway, Dunlop's book covers quite a bit of recent Chinese history from a unique perspective, but her experience runs pretty true to my own. The one big obvious thing that she misses in thinking about how her attitudes towards food have changed is that she has herself changed (particularly, gotten older). But it's a great idiosyncratic picture of a society where, as Lu Xun and others have noted (see Diary of a Madman), eating is central to both identity and social relations.

Nitpick: it's spelled Ramon Llull.

I hope your description of Reason is correct; I liked it better under Postrel than Gillespie.

Money is fungible. I hate when people talk about what you're going to do with this specific subset
of your money. It's a meaningless question. The nearest meaningful question is, what is a good thing
to spend $X on, given that you just received or will receive $X?

Tyler, why are you so afraid of semicolons?

I challenge you to increase your semicolon usage 100%.

Tyler, first listen to, and appreciate, Uncle Tupelo. And Wagonrunner, Summerteeth is
number 3, better than A Ghost is Born and Sky Blue Sky...via Chicago, man.
