What I've been reading

Descubre al Economista que llevas dentro.  That's the Spanish language translation of my Discover Your Inner Economist, due out in Spain February 19.

You can order copies through some of these sources.

The translation is very well done and accurate, though it is odd to read myself sounding like a Spaniard instead of a colloquial Mexican.  Whenever I go to Spain I am in fact shocked to discover that there is an entire European country in which the people speak Spanish.  And they speak it well.

If you want to come to my talk in Madrid next week, here is the link.

As a Spanish-speaking Texan, when I went to London this summer, whenever I would hear people speaking Spanish, my initial, subconscious reaction was always "what is WRONG with those people's Spanish?"

Never any occasion to hear Castillian Spanish in these parts...

"Whenever I go to Spain I am in fact shocked to discover that there is an entire European country in which the people speak Spanish. And they speak it well."

That part probably sounded better in your head than spelled out.

In other words: You are surprised that they speak Spanish in Spain.

I digress, never mind this comment :-)

And when are you coming to Mexico to give a talk or promote your book?

Any chance of a Latin american translation ? Or I just buy the Euro-Spanish version ? It sound weird to us in Latin America too...

"Descubre al Economista que llevas dentro" seems to translate most easily out of castillian Spanish as "Discover Your Inner Accountant". My fellow economists' ignorance of accountancy has always appalled me; but the Sapnish identification of the two as a single category leaves me almost equally unhappy.

Hasta miercoles,

Un saludo cordial,

Un título mejor habría sido "El economista que llevas adentro".
Ya en inglés la inclusión del verbo discover sonaba innecsearia. En castellano no agrega a un título ya largo. Por supuesto, el adjetivo "adentro" es más apropiado que "dentro".

Well, this was such an Earl Hickey type of comment... una cita para la posteridad! I was really laughing my head off. And thanks for the compliment, by the way :-)

We eagerly await your arrival here at Georgetown University. Allegedly, a sound track will accompany your appearance. Paso Doble after los Madrilenos? Tejano? Oaxaqueno? All will be welcome, and I am urging all my students to attend.

Well, Edgardo, I don´t think that the adverb "adentro" es más apropiado que "dentro", at least in Castilian. "Adentro" is implying a direction ("vete adentro!"), and not just location.

Bill, when is Mr. Cowen coming to DC? I wouldn´t mind at all to attend his talk.

Sorry, mr. Cowen, I forgot you teach here at the GMU. :)

Alex, as defined by Diccionario Real Academia

adentro.
1.adv. l. A o en lo interior. Mar adentro, tierra adentro. Se metió por las puertas adentro.

dentro.
1. adv. l. En la parte interior de un espacio o término real o imaginario. Me ha salido de dentro. Se frota por dentro. Dirigir todo hacia dentro.

Let me add that a better title would have been "El economista que llevamos adentro".

My Spanish isn't very good... for some reason the title phrasing makes me think in terms of some alien parasite Homo economicus fetus, just waiting to burst out. Descubre al alienígena que llevas adentro?

Yes. We spanish are very ptoud of how well we speak our own language.
