In re suicide bombers: Might middle class people also be especially vulnerable to being talked into formalized self-destructive behavior?

The Macro Market Musing blog has a link to a paper on the business cycle and religiosity. A timely topic.

Re: the Brazilian painting and the link to a Portuguese-language news site. This is off-topic, but an interesting free podcast site for learning basic Brazilian Portuguese is Tá Falado, offered by the University of Texas. It is particularly useful for people who already know some Spanish, as it places a lot of emphasis on contrasts and similarities between Spanish and Portuguese.

Curiosity, Tyler: can you speak any portuguese?? (Ou você fala português?)

I'm also curious if Tyler knows Portuguese. But in any case, anyone fluent in Spanish can, with a day's worth of basic Portuguese grammar (a = la, o = el; de + a = da, de + o = do, en + a = na, en + o = no, etc.) automatically attain an upper-intermediate reading knowledge of Portuguese. Actually speaking it is somewhat harder though, because of the difficult pronunciations (nasal diphthongs, open vs. closed vowels, etc) and a brand new set of verb conjugations to learn.
