Rental markets in everything

Fancy handbags.  That's in case you didn't get the gift you wanted today.

Thanks to Josh Chaffin for the pointer.

Originally I thought the idea was goofy, then again I thought Netflix was goofy as well as there's Blockbuster. Learning from my past mistakes I think this will be a success (they company's been around for at least a year now) as they are dealing in a durable product that women want for a specific occasion and then don't need it again till the next party.

What do they do with old purses? Unlike Netflix where people regularly rent old films I can't see women that use this service wanting a purse that's more than a couple of years old. Maybe they can sell off the under-rented ones.

How do they price the purses? Take the cost and divide by the number of rental months they can get out of it? I'll like to see an auction for the more popular ones and see how that plays out.

Interesting. I wonder if that would work here in Japan, where designer goods are very popular. (Maybe such a thing already exists. I have little interest in designer goods myself, but can't help noticing their popularity among Japanese women especially.) Since you have to get all dolled up or the fancy purse looks out of place, you can't use it every day unless you wear designer clothes every day.
