4. The heritability and malleability of IQ

On lateness, why not just start meetings w/o the late-niks? Seems simpler than driving your blood pressure through the roof, like Munger.

On IQ; he makes mention of how rare it is for anyone to change their mind. Well, there's a great insight.
More to the point of his subject though, the general public - or at least the casual reader of such things as IQ studies and the nature vs. nurture debate at large - tends to resist the idea that IQ is more environmental than heriditary simply because it defies common sense.
I'm not even trying to argue the point here one way or another, but why does the anti-heritability side of the debate wear such a surprised look on their face when people don't agree with them?
No matter how well stated their argument, it is running into the wind as it were; against intuition and their science is no where near a slam-dunk.

"the idea that IQ is more environmental than heriditary simply because it defies common sense."
Much of what is "common sense" to people does not meet statistical standards of proof. Common sense only works when the variables are directly observable. It is obvious to people that social and economic position is hereditable, but they have no way of directly observing IQ. When experts inform them that some factor such as IQ is important for success ,people have no reason to disbelieve them, so come to the conclusion that IQ is hereditary. Most people also believe that most billionaires have inherited their wealth and that the highest incomes are earned by movie and sports stars.

I was going to recommend this article to TC, since I remember he's run into the more thuggish Bell Curve disciples before, shame on me for thinking he'd miss it.
Ray G, you think you can really apply common sense on a concept as non-trivial and constructed as IQ?
The sad truth is that intelligence research has, from its inception and right up to today, been used more as a tool to justify inequality than as something to help humanity. It's great to see people who are trying to wrest it back, put it on a sound basis and do something useful with it.
As they say, read the whole thing, but if anyone here is going to skim over the headlines and make uninformed comments on it (no! do you think so?!) the second-to-last paragraph holds the most interesting view towards the future.

The relevant issue for economists is not how heritable IQ differences are, but how stable they are. If they fluctuated rapidly, they wouldn't be worthy studying for insights into, say, future global economic development. What we've seen over the last century, however, is that group IQ differences, whatever their causes, are surprisingly stable. Thus, the study of group IQ differences is likely to provide the courageous economist with a rich source of underexploited insights for decades to come.

Few hereditarians would mind if highly educated obscurantists argued the environmentalist position as long as they advanced policies based on a hereditarian understanding -- even better if they advanced them while claiming they were based on environmentalist understanding of human nature. The fine art of hypocrisy is practised with virtually all else, so why not with IQ? So long as the end result is a cessation of mass immigration and the cessation propagation of the feeble-minded classes via tax-enabled procreation, who cares what sort of environmentalist gobbledegook is employed to either obscure or justify (or both) the policies undertaken? If it's possible (and it cleary is) to con the gulls that policies that negatively impact them (immigration, welfare) are in their benefit, think how much easier it would be to sell them on policies that do in fact favor them.
