The New York Times: gems from the archives
From Jason Kottke, who else? Here is the first NYT mention of Harry Potter. Here is the first NYT restaurant review.

The Potter article is kind of a bust - They mention nothing more than that it that it is selling well.

The point of the Potter link, in part, was to demonstrate that back when the first book came out, it was just another children's book on the fiction bestseller list and not a World! Wide! PHENOMENON!!

Plus a lot of people think the Harry Potter books only took off due to a marketing blitz, when the time series was the other way around - the Harry Potter books took off and then the marketing stepped up once the publishers realised how popular the books were.
