I'll be doing the first post on Greg Clark's A Farewell to Alms this Tuesday, try to read the first 112 pages.  In the meantime, here is a review from The Economist.

Hmm, I don't think it will have arrived by then. Oh well, so much for that.

IS this book really hard to come by? I found a copy at my local Borders.

Posted by: chrisare at Aug 17, 2007 2:48:07 PM

The book is all over by now and when I asked pretty much everyone reported getting their copies...

Amazon still is out of the book. I have a October 8, 2007 - October 12, 2007 delivery estimate for my copy.

I am not (necessarily) asking this sarcastically - but do a lot of people not live near bookstores? That's where I got mine...

The book is available in stores, but my pre-ordered one haven't arrived either.

"Amazon still is out of the book. I have a October 8, 2007 - October 12, 2007 delivery estimate for my copy."

Heh. After not finding it locally, I ordered on Amazon. And they have the wonderful "Only 1 copy left, Order Now!". Which means "try to order this book, give us your money, because we won't ship it until we have it." I have the same wonderful 4-6 week wait.

Harkening back to the Bin Laden post, are there a few titles that can help a layman dispel some of his false positive
beliefs about how the world works? Either a readable textbook or a popular title that aims to give both a macro and micro
overview?

I find things like this blog fascinating, and have enjoyed some popular books. But the technical stuff here loses me. I know
cannot Wikipedia myself up to PhD or working-world economist standards, but I'd love to have enough background that I could at
least understand the explanations for the three principles/theories listed in Bin Laden post. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Thanks

Clark covers great sweeps of historical ground. For a check on his vision, can I suggest some ordinary, common-or-garden, historical research. This is to give some idea of what was actually going on (an awful lot) in the various historical contexts that he swoops over. It's a longish list, but I hope it provides readers with another view at whichever point they want one.

England:

1. R H Britnell, The Commercialisation of English Society 1000-1500 ( 2nd ed, Manchester UP 1996). _Legal changes_ (in the common law, _not_ Parliamentary legislation) plus market developments. Note the varieties of legal status, & tthe manorial documents from which info is obtained.

2. Christopher Dyer, Standards of Living in the Later Middle Ages…c.1200-1520 (CUP 1989).

3. Keith Wrightson, Earthly Necessities, Economic Lives in Early Modern Britain, 1470-1750 (Penguin 2002.)Neatly complemented by:

4. Joan Thirsk, Economic Policy and Projects, The Development of a Consumer Society in Early Modern England (pb ed, Clarendon Press 1988).

5. J A Sharpe, Early Modern England, A Social History 1550-1750 ( Hodder Arnold, 2nd ed 1997).

6. Maxine Berg, The Age of Manufactures 1700-1820 (2nd ed, Routledge 1994).

7. Neil McKendrick et al, The Birth of a Consumer Society, The Commercialisation of Eighteenth Century
England (Hutchinson 1983). “Few experiences more vividly convey the sense of a consumer society than
a sustained diet of late eighteenth-century advertisements” (p. 182.)

8. Roy Porter, English Society in the Eighteenth Century (rev ed, Penguin 1990).

For legal changes in England (in the common law; there was virtually no legislation):

9. J H Baker, An Introduction to English Legal History (4th ed, Butterworths 2002)

10. James Oldham, English Common Law in the Age of Mansfield (Univ of North Carolina Press 2004).

Japan:

11. Susan B Hanley & Kozo Yamamura, Economic & Demographic Change in Pre-industrial Japan 1600-1868 (1977.)

12. Susan B Hanley, Everyday Things in Premodern Japan (Univ of Calif Press 1997).

India:

13. C A Bayly, Indian Society & the Making of the British Empire (CUP 1988).

14. C A Bayly, Rulers, Townsmen & Bazaars..1770-1870 (OUP Indian ed 1992)
