I have not read the book but have one question.
He says downward economic mobility played a significant role in
English economic development.
Did he look for this downward mobility in other countries and find it did not exist elsewhere? Or did he just not look at that aspect of the question?

he found reproduction of the elites in china or japan. he looked at the qing royal lineage and amongst the samurai. i suspect he's wrong here, and looking at the qing royal lineage seems an excessively narrow definition of the chinese elite (e.g., none of the merchant princes of fujian who were the ancestors of the southeast asian overseas chinese community would be descended from the manchu invaders).

he found plenty of partible inheritance. i.e., big estates generally broke up.
