The Raw Shark Texts

...is great fun.  I still can't decide if it is a "good bad book," like Shantaram, or a "good good book," but it's a good book of some kind or another.

Imagine a cross between Memento and The Time Traveler's Wife and you get halfway there.  There's also plenty on when cheap talk equilibria matter (I hope you've seen Saw) and some visual influences from graphic novels and alternative typographies.  In any case it should become a big hit.

I considered the same question. Franky, when I started, I thought it was a bad book (the descriptions are overdone, e.g., (as I turn to a random page): "When the First Eric Sanderson wrote the letters he was an empty box of tactics and manoeuvres, a broken wind-up soldier." I was also a bit turned off by the science-fiction at first--it's just not my thing). I slowly warmed up to it, and joined the good bad book bandwagon. But, by the end, I must admit that I now consider it a good good book. The characters were engaging. The flip book was fantastically whimsical, and I love the metaphor of avoiding one's personal demons (in this case, the ludovician) by literally pretending to be someone else. Plus, you gotta admit it was a good love story.
