The funniest sentence I read today

Incubus is a 1965 horror film that was filmed in Esperanto and starred William Shatner.

Via Jason Kottke.  The first link includes a pretty amazing trailer for the film.

All films starring William Shatner are horror films.

You're just now learning of this?

In the third video down, Shatner makes the claim that French people can't understand each other. I can't tell if he's joking or not.

I saw this when it first hit DVD. It goes beyond awful.

I have seen this movie. It is... not very good. Even despite the fact that Shatner manages to avoid overacting, perhaps because he's too busy trying to figure out how to pronounce his lines. It's allegedly the only feature-length film in Esperanto. Note that it's pre-Star Trek I have seen the grave of Dr. Zamenhof, who invented Esperanto and is buried in Warsaw. There is a church in Warsaw with the heart of Chopin in a glass case, because although he was buried in Paris, he always wanted his heart to remain in Poland, although perhaps not quite so literally as it turned out. Warsaw, Esperanto, and Incubus are all deeply strange.

A little less han a year ago I walked into a bar which happened to be showing this movie and couldn't tear myself away from the remainder of it.

"ke" lingvo, Fatwa? But while Shatner's mangling of the language is legendary in Esperanto circles (he apparently thought that he didn't need to learn how to pronounce it, because his way would become the new standard), Esperanto is as alive today as it ever was, meaning that it's a fascinating subculture of a couple of tens of thousands of highly idealistic people. I think I'll pay them a visit when I move to Oslo.

No need to be highly idealistic to like Esperanto; you just have to enjoy beautiful things.
