I've been hearing a lot of libertarians saying we must remain optimistic about the future, since we're just so right and just that gosh darn it we've got to win eventually. If I was going to believe things because they were pleasant rather than because the facts I have available show them to most likely be the case I wouldn't have become a libertarian in the first place. From what I've read of it National Review is a depressing shadow of it's olden days (or what they have been made out to be, since I don't personally know), but the slogan "Stand athwart history yelling 'Stop!'" might be a better frame of mind for the libertarian movement. Most people aren't libertarians. They are going to continue to not be libertarians and the government is going to continue getting bigger in size and scope. What we can aspire to do is serve as as something of an impediment to this process and enjoy what life is available to us, without imagining there is some Promised Land we'll attain after we've paid our dues in the desert. If my view is accurate than the most wrong-headed are what I refer to as "worse is better" libertarians, who are predominately anarchists expecting the State to collapse any day now. Stefan Molyneux (the second link seems like a joke but is uncomfortably similar to much of what he says) is a particularly boneheaded example.
