...boredom has little to do with lack of external stimulation and everything to do with being out of touch with our emotions.
More here, though I wonder whether a third cause is controlling the correlation.

I don't believe this. I am far less bored now than when I was at school. And I place that entirely due to my getting a lot more outside stimulation and distraction.
From this summary, the researchers don't investigate the possiblity that boredom may cause being out of touch with ones' emotions.

I think people need to distinguish "I want something but I don't know what it is, and nothing suggested to me fits the bill" from "nothing appeals to me".
Both may look like boredom. The former is closest to what he means by a lack of self awareness. The second may be quite self aware. It's possible the latter is correlated with depression, and may even be described as depressed, but I think the latter is a truer description of boredom than the former.
