Markets in everything, German edition
Man schickt eine SMS mit der Bezeichnung des Straßenzuges und der Uhrzeit, und zehn Sekunden später geht das Licht an – gesteuert wird das über ein Empfangsmodul, das in die grauen Schaltschränke eingebaut wird. Auf der Teststrecke, die wir eingerichtet haben, ist es dann fünfzehn Minuten lang hell. Das sind 30 Laternen auf 2,5 Kilometer. Den Nutzer kostet das 20 Cent, plus die Kosten für die SMS.
In other words, you pay, using your cell phone, to have the street lights turned on. That is for the town of Lemgo. Here is the home page of the start-up.
Thanks to Martin for the pointer.

Mir geht ein Licht auf!
(German idiom meaning: "I am getting it!" - or literally: "This turns a light on for me to see (the point)."
Wollen wir aus "Marginal Revolution" ein zweisprachiges Forum machen? Ich bin dabei - in der Hoffnung, dass mir hier endlich ein Licht aufgeht. (Anspielung darauf, dass ich Tyler Cowen in meinen Beiträgen zu "Does Hayek make any sense? (Februar 2007) ziemlich kritisiert habe.
Translation: How about turning "Marginal Revolution" into a bilingual blog? I'd be happy to join - in the hope to see some light, eventually. (Alluding to my rather harsh criticism levelled against Tyler Cowen in "Does Hayek make any sense?" (February 2007).

Good idea!
I am sure that people that really need street lights, such as young teenage girls walking home alone after dark, will see the value of paying to turn on the street lights instead of saving up for a new pair of jeans.

@Aaron
Ah, but with such an argument, the government seems not to be in the business of protecting its citizens, while standard social contract theory says that a government should protect its citizens. (not that I agree with social contract theory).

I do not get your comment Kurt.
I was being sarcastic and I do think that the government should be in the business of protecting its citizens

大家好,我是臺灣人,從臺灣一個人搬家來到美國,環境很陌生,感覺很孤單。以前在臺灣幾家知名的徵信社工作過,我是一個優秀的徵信工作者,希望早點找到適合自己的工作。希望通過貴站,認識更多的朋友。
