The ever-invigorating Leiter Reports [addendum: in this case Professor Hellie] writes:
Excellent! Daniel Ortega, a true peoples' hero, appears poised to make his comeback. Caveat: he used to be a Good Guy, overthrowing one of the more vicious Central American caudillos, and valiantly stood up for years against a ruinous US proxy war, dunno what he's been up to these days.
Here is what Daniel Ortega has been up to. His defenders may wish to note he was cleared.

The 2nd linked article doesn't say Ortega was cleared, just that he dodged the charges and prosecution. Am I misunderstanding something?

All,
The apparently victory of Daniel Ortega is an important event. However, he is no Morales or Chavez. Take a look at http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/andrew_anthony/2006/11/the_comandante_who_became_a_ca.html.
The article does mention the unproven abuse charges against him. However, it describes in detail his descent from "comandante to caudillo". Apparently, almost all of his old allies on the left have rejected him. Meanwhile he has linked up with his former enemies on the right.

as a Nicaraguan all i can do is hope he does good to lift Nicaragua from poverty.
He is a smart politician (and doesn't know when to give up), and he has promised many things to the Nicaraguan public. An example that I find humorious is that the Chinese businessmen warned that if Ortega won the election they will shutdown the factories and leave (reason: Ortega has promised to unionize factory workers. Family members that work at these factories have told me horrible tales of what they have to put up with).Once the South Koreans heard that the chinese would leave they immediately told the Ortega's party that they would be willing to set up shop in the empty factories (if the chinese left) and allow unions.

Invigorating? Like a round of fecal matter to the face might be invigorating? Leiter, despite his grand academic credentials, is not much of a thinker. He might as well be writing propaganda for the People's Party of his choice, such is the depth of his blog writing. He's also quite fond of the phrase "War of agression on Iraq." Is there any other kind of war? Quick, name the last three Wars of Passivism. Why oh why has the United States abandonded it's time-honored tradition conducting Wars of Retreats?! Thanks for the reference to a blog I will not be reading for enlightenment.

Mr. Andersen, "war of aggression" is a term of art in international law; most wars are not wars of aggression. Perhaps if you read more, and spouted off less, you might be enlightened.

I am very interested in seeing the outcome of this election for Nicaragua. After the Sandinistas were effectively overthrown in 1990 by the US-backed Contras, governmental power has been in conservative hands. Those conservative hands were able to bring a relative stability to the economy, but have done nothing for the poor - which is to say the majority of the people. That's why Ortega won the election - the poor = the majority and they are not afraid to vote. Whether Ortega still holds any sway after his wheelings and dealings (alluded to in the previous comments) remains to be seen. And here's hoping that he's learned to separate the wheat from the chaff as far as socialism is concerned.
On a sidenote, I found it interesting that the four main candidates were all from a party that was labeled either Sandinista or Liberal but that spanned the spectrum from conservative to liberal.

Well, it was only a proxy war once you concede that Ortega and the Sandinistas were more than simply a rebellion against a vicious caudillo, but also a front supported by the KGB and the Cubans. A proxy war, by definition, requires two outside powers each supporting one side. Seems to me that once one calls it a proxy war, one already concedes that the Sandinistas were more than just a national revolution.
Otherwise, one could use proxy wars for all sorts of things, like the defeat of the Taliban in Afghanistan was also a proxy war, since it was largely accomplished by the Northern Alliance + US special forces and air support. However, it doesn't really fit the definition of a proxy war, rather the US helping one side in a civil war.

Well, I'll just take my place at the back of the class then Mick - I stand corrected, in part. Leiter is still a hack and the war in Iraq is also not a war of aggression, as defined by 'international law.'
I'm curious that you claim most wars are not wars of aggression. Someone starts them, no? Isn't that the 'aggression' part?
