Typepad comments

Sometimes it shows up on the blog that there are zero comments, but of course MR readers have more to say than that.  Don't be fooled by this recurring glitch in Typepad.

MR readers also have complained that when writing comments, the right side of the line runs into the ads and is impossible to read when editing.  Do any of you have useful suggestions for addressing this problem?

Comments

First type your comment in a text editor like Notepad, then copy and paste it into the comments box.

Type a word or two, hit "Preview," and a much smaller editing box appears. You then can do the rest of your typing in this smaller box, without anything running into the ad space.

I've had the "spillover" problem. If you preview your comments, you get a better behaving window. So, just type a word or two, and then hit preview.

If you change the properties from style=width 80% to size="40" or size="50" it should look similar and behave properly. Internet explorer appears to have trouble accounting for the area behind the right side sidebar as being used so the table overflows there.

Write shorter comments.

Use Firefox.

Thanks for the preview tip, guys!

Alas, I'm stuck on IE because I have to use it to see what our customers see.

Chris Yeh: Then you might want to try Firefox with the IE Tab extension so that you can pick and choose which pages appear in IE view :-)

Couldn't help the evangelization -- you of course should use what you want to use, but if the objection is over something that can be remedied with Firefox and an extension, then I'll try overcoming that objection. Again with the :-)

For more helpful advice, I'd recommend the blog move to WordPress. Simple. Then it would be more convenient for me to offer advice. (I'm not going to refrain from a third smiley, but please take my suggestion lightly...)

I'm not going to refrain... (doh!)

I can whole-heartedly agree with suggesting, in a friendly spirit, switching to wordpress. Type-pad and Moveable Type are pretty decent, but I've found Wordpress to be less of a headache.

Put in a Help ticket, I've always found TypePad's support people to be very responsive and helpful.

Your comment box is determined by the following:

<textarea tabindex="4" id="text" name="text" rows="10" style="width: 80%;">

That is invalid. The cols must be specified. See:
http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/interact/forms.html#h-17.7

Fixing this may or may not solve the text running into the ads problem.
