Don't forget that there's been rating inflation since the 70's, too. I was only an A-player in the 80s (and am severely out of practice) but find that 2000 players are not nearly as tough as I remember! "Me 'ats off to the Duke" nonetheless!
That said, is it true that winning the "New Jersey Open" is the same as the state championship?

You had an Elo rating of roughly 2350 as a teen? Holy Smokes! It seems you were quite the pawn pusher once upon a time. Care to post some of your games someday if you still have them?
Maybe Dr. Cowen you could issue a post on what style of player you were or what your favorite openings and defenses were. Your fellow players (both active and retired) would love to hear from you. :)

I suspect that economics has ruined his game. I can just see the good prof hunched over the board, working out the application of the Coase Theorem to the situation at hand ....
