How is this for a scheme?:

I remember reading about this when the guy started and saying, "if he succeeds, he is the greatest capitalist to ever live." I would say he's made his case quite effectively. Perhaps he can trade the house for a Nobel prize.
Of course, this is just the sort of thing that could start to deflate the housing bubble. "That house? I wouldn't pay one red paperclip for that!"

Something like this is how I first actually pieced together in my mind that value is created and wealth is not a zero sum game. I was at the time thinking of used/vintage clothing stores as the example but this is just as good.
Imagine if we could ever get information/aggregation costs down to zero or near zero (sort of like what craigslist does in a way) for secondary markets.

The nature of the tradeable good as he moved up the value train tells an interesting story. The first five items are all manufactured goods. Then, when he had worked up to about $100, the service economy kicked in: A party, the publicity of trading a snowbile with a talk show host, a trip. Then he traded for one more manufactured good (the cube van) and then again a pure service good (recording session). That service good was traded for the use rights of a capital good (one year's lodging in a house). Two of the current three offers are also service goods (a private stripper party, a thirty second TV commerical).
What does this tell us? That the uncertainty in value decreases as a manufuctured good decreases as the value of the good increases, while a service good does the opposite? That more expensive manfactured items are more difficiult to trade or less generic, and therefore less amenable to this kind of bargaining? Or is there a parable about the changes in the North American economy lurking in this tale?

I wonder if he's been paying his taxes? I don't know about canada, but in the US, barter is taxable income and must be reported on your tax return.

Funny, but most of the real value increases he's gotten have been from people doing it for the novelty or publicity. It's not much different than other "interesting website" schemes that make money. Also judging by the offers for his last two things he may have trouble moving up much farther.
His best bet other than a sheer publicity stunt is to trade for something somewhat unique or of indeterminate value, like hanging out with a certain celebrity, and then trade that up for much more cash value. Considering he's already at $10k he doesnt have too far to go to afford a small house in a rural area.

I think you are all overestimating the trade of the material objects, and underestimating the trade of material objects for publicity/being part of something fun and new. A lot (all?) of these trades would never have been done without the publicity-factor. Lets just take the first trade: Why should one trade a pen with a paperclip? Without the publicity-factor no one would do that, paperclips are everywhere, pens a more scarce. Its just af mediagimmick, not a thing to draw big lessons from.
