Dubai has made some impressive strides, but it's not likely to be a pleasant place if and when Saudi Arabia falls. Living next to a comparative giant is risky when the giant has feet of clay.

I'd like to go for the same reasonI might like to see Barnum & Bailey again -- the freak show. The structures all look very weird...not a friendly place.

I've seen this a few times. There was also a show about it over the weekend, maybe the Discovery Channel. Quite a feat of engineering!

One error in the Business Week report: Mohammed bin Rashid al-Makhtoum is no longer the Crown Prince of Dubai - he ascended to the throne when his brother died in January.
The main unpleasantness in Dubai is the traffic. Other than that it is an interesting mix of old-world trading port and post-modern metropolis. The most interesting thing is that only about 10% of the population is native - the rest are temporary foreign residents (although some have been there for 30+ years.)
Every time I go to Dubai, when I get home I feel glad I don't live there. Driving really is a white-knuckle experience. One part of me enjoys the fact that the speed limit is 100 mph, but most of me fears an imminent death.

To highlight how technologically advanced the UAE is, our student newspaper will be running a feature of pictures like this taken by a student from the UAE over winter break. Keep an eye out for 'em.

I love it here.
Reasons: my job is fulfilling, the students are inquisitive and excited to be at an excellent American style institution in the Gulf, many of my students world class, my department is cultural diverse and harmonious and productive, I lead an active social life (two barbershop groups, a larger choir, frequent black tie events, great restaurants, great natural history (in neighboring Oman), member of Dubai Natural History group (frequent camping trips, sleeping under stars), the driving is a bit wild but not white knuckle, excellent wine store, excellent selection of the best world beers, and so on.
So, obviously, when I write about the Dubai and the UAE I am informed, but self selected. Am I too close to give an accurate picture? Perhaps, but I don't think so. Seeing is believing.
Is it a bit like living in Disneyworld? Well, yes. But there's plenty that's real and genuine and a blast to embrace.

This image suggests that their culture is crass, commercial and detached
from nature or anyting noble. They think of nothing bigger than themsleves.
No sense of god or the infinity. Phew!! For a while there I thought maybe
we could not trust them with the ports.
