My favorite things North Carolina
1. Jazz musician: Umm...should it be John Coltrane or Thelonious Monk?
2. Bluesman: Reverend Gary Davis remains underrated. Try "Maple Leaf Rag" or "Sally Where'd You Get Your Liquor From?" For country music -- really just another form of blues -- you have Earl Scruggs and Merle and Doc Watson. George Clinton did funk.
3. Female singer-songwriter: Tori Amos, favorite album Little Earthquakes. Her most underrated album is Strange Little Girls. Nina Simone is another good candidate, although she did mostly covers.
4. Movie, set in: I hate Bull Durham, so you will have to help me out here...Is part of Sherman's March set in the state?
5. Writer: Thomas Wolfe, Look Homeward, Angel.
6. Basketball player. You-know-who was actually born in Brooklyn, so I say Meadowlark Lemon.
The bottom line: The state is strong on music, sports, and barbecue.

We have a pretty kickass coastal area, and gorgeous mountains including the incomparable Blue Ridge Parkway.
A lot of my landscape photographs ( http://www.pbase.com/sdaconsulting/photos ) were taken in North Carolina.
And of course you've already tried our Lexington barbeque (although I am more partial to the vinegar-based eastern NC style myself).

I'll also point out that Dizzy Gillespie, although from just over the state line in South Carolina, studied at the Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina.
There are plenty of other in-state basketball players, of course. (David Thompson, Rodney Rogers from my hometown, etc.)

What about Mary Garber (although born in New York)? She was the first female sportswriter in the country and worked for the Winston Salem paper for 50 years. The stories about her and her relationships with people like Coach K, and Jackie Robinson, and Earl the Pearl, and legends of other sports people (Big House Gaines at WS State) are huge. But her real contributions are to the thousands of less famous athletes who she covered.

Sherman's March did, indeed, include sections set in North Carolina. Alternatively, you could go with Cape Fear, Cold Mountain, or this year's Junebug. Though I'll second M. P. Gibson's exasperation -- you can't HATE Bull Durham without hating fun, itself.

You had to show Jordan going against the Pacers, didn't you?
I still remember the '98 East finals that went seven games. Miller shoving Jordan aside before hitting the Game 4 winner, and Jordan falling down in the lane (and thus failing to tie Game 6 in the closing seconds) are my favored memories. Rik Smits tapping a jump ball right to Pippen late in Game 7 is better forgotten.
Uhh, how this ties in to North Carolina... maybe... Backup Pacers guard Fred Jones shares his name with a character who pops up in two Ben Folds songs? Folds, of course, calls N.C. home and was born in Winston-Salem.

In addition to Meadowlark Lemon and David Thompson, North Carolina natives in the Hall of Fame include Bob McAdoo, James Worthy, and Sam Jones. Walt Bellamy was from North Carolina but played college ball in Indiana. Billy Cunningham and Earl Monroe played college ball in NC but greew up elsewhere. Like Jordan, Pete Maravich was born elsewhere but raised in North Carolina. He of course didn't play college ball in-state, either, after LSU hired away his father from N.C. State.

In music, I agree with Scruggs and the Watsons, though Ronnie Milsap and Randy Travis deserve mention. If you accept those born but not raised in NC, Roberta Flack is the best female singer-songwriter.

Yes, well, and Cold Mountain was filmed in Romania. David Gordon Green's George Washington and All the Real Girls were both set in North Carolina, and I believe both were shot there, too. The first is lovely, and very unusual. The second a bit less peculiar - and less successful for it, I think - but still worth watching.

"Cape Fear" (both versions) is, for all intents and purposes, set in N.C., as is "Thunder Road."
There's also "The Flim-Flam Man" with George C. Scott.
There's the whole "I Know What You Did Last Summer" series.
In TV, of course, there's "Andy Griffin" and "Dawson's Creek."
And "The Famous Jett Jackson," set in fictional Wilstead, N.C.

MJ's family is from Kackalaky but in Brooklyn temporarily for some reason I forget. They moved back when he was very, very young (<1 year?). He's from NC.
Tori Amos is the opposite - her family was on vacation when she happened to be born. She's not from NC.
