New food bleg
This coming weekend I will be in Memphis, Tennessee, looking for barbecue. I know or know of the famous places, can you suggest a dump instead? Don't even bother if they have their own web site. How about a place with an open barbecue pit? I also will be driving down Rt.61 to Clarksdale, Mississippi, how about something there or along the way? Comments are open.

There's reportedly a Church's Chicken at Rtes. 61 and 49 in Clarksdale, at the intersection (or "crossroads") where Robert Johnson was supposed to have sold his soul to the devil. Might check that out.

it's famous so you probably know it,
but the Rendevous is still the best BBQ in memphis in my opinion.
if by some strange chance you've never been there, it's worth it.
Germantown Commisar is also another semi-famous place, but it's not quite a dump.
can't recommend anywhere in Mississippi. Went to roadside catfish place near Oxford once that was amazing.

Cozy Corner at 745 North Parkway is sort of a legendary dump. The pork is sliced, not pulled, which is a bit of an anomaly for Memphis-style cue, but the sweet tea is the best in town. I like the colored fluorescent light bulbs. Also maybe try one of the numerous Top's locations around town. Most are dumps, they aren't terribly well known to tourists, but the cue is quite good. From what I have read by you Tyler, I am guessing that you would be a little disappointed by Rendezvous (the volume that they serve to nondiscriminating tourists reduces quality in terms of consistent, hot, moist and meaty racks of ribs), and perhaps Corky's too, but in my opinion, when Corky's (pulled pork. Ribs too if you like them wet) is good, it's the best. Go to the main Poplar Ave. location for best results. Man, this is making my mouth water. I am from Memphis but am a grad student in Davis, CA. Went home for the first time in 2 years this summer, and the above is a retracing of the footsteps of my own barbecue odyssey.

Like Matthew said, try Tops. Most people not from Memphis don't know about it and the bbq is very good. They are tops in barbeque and tops in Memphis too.

The Cozy Corner recommendation is a good one, but please do not miss Central BBQ, on Central Avenue near Christian Brothers University. Proprietor Craig Blondis has the magic going, certainly compared to others in town who are resting on their reputation. Craig's ribs are a work of art!

I assume you're going to Clarksdale, not Clarksburg... in any event, you should go to Morgan Freeman's place there, although I can't remember the name of it to save my life (and frankly don't know if they serve BBQ).
As far as Memphis goes: The Rendezvous is good if you like dry rub. Wet, you can't go wrong with Corky's.

All of the places mentioned above are good - Rndezvous has unique "Dry Ribs" - which are very good, yet the place is far
from a dump. Avoid Corky's at all costs (it is overpriced, overcrowded and inconsistent).
The best BBQ (pulled pork), hands down is Interstate BBQ. Any one can cook pork and keep it tender, the sauce is what makes BBQ, BBQ. Interstate has the best sauce which recepie is still a secret.
From downtown, head south on 3rd Street. Go about 3 or 4 miles and then it will be on the west side of the street. If you are coming from the airport, head west toward the river and follow the signs to the casinos. Take the Hwy 61 exit and the head toward downtown Memphis. Interstate BBQ will be up on the left.
Interstate was started by Jim Neely in the eighties. He bought an old liquor store known for drug deals, closed the the store down and reopened it as a BBQ joint. He put all of the local kids who were just hanging out around the store.
Interstate has been voted as one of the best BBQ places in the US several times. The neighborhood is rough, the building is far from polished, but the food is second to none.
Make sure you get the BBQ spaghetti and the Sock it to me cake for dessert. They also serve beer in quarts.

Rendezvous, as others have pointed out, has dry ribs not wet. I think tha accounts for the wildly different views of it. You go in expecting wet ribs and get dry (possibly somthing you have never had before) and report unfavorably on it.
Interstate BBQ is one place I have not tried, but it is on the list.
Corky's is your base line comparison, as far as I am concerned. It is real good (i eat there regulary), but there are better places in memphis.

Interstate for pulled pork sandwich. Rendezvous for ribs, Corky's on Poplar for ribs and fixings, and Cozy Corner for ribs.

I couldn't imagine going to Memphis and not eating at Rendezvous or Corky's. But check out Hollyeats.com and his reviews of down home and barbecue joints in the South. http://www.hollyeats.com/South.htm

Interstate Barbecue is absolutely the best for pulled pork.
One is conveniently located in the B terminal of the Memphis airport. The ambiance is equally horrible in both locations. But I doubt there's better-tasting food to be found in the United States.

I live in Memphis. Agree with many of the places mentioned. My favorites include The Barbecue Shop (Voted #1 in 2004 by the local paper), and Interstate or Neely's barbecue (owned by the same family), Germantown Commissary, and Central Barbecue(on central Street near Christian brothers Univ). Avoid Cozy Corner (a dump), and Corky's (commercialized).Corky's is not very good anymore, so I would choose someplace else. Germantown Commissary is in the suburb of Germantown and is wonderful, and makes excellent Brunswick Stew-a southern favorite.Redezvous is good, but over-rated, and has become a tourist spot over the years.My choices in top three rank would be Barbecue Shop, Interstate or Neely's Barbecue, then Germantown Commissary, and Central Barbecue a close 4th. All of these places serve wet and dry ribs, as well as pulled pork barbecue with the fixings-slaw,beans,etc. Beef barbecue is not popular here,or very good so stick with the pork barbecue.
In Clarksdale go to Ramon's. I think it is owned by actor Morgan Freeman or his family. It serves Southern-delta type food, also known as "Soul-food". Enjoy.

Forgot to mention another place in Clarksdale- Abe's Bar-B-Q at junction of Route 61 and 49. Place is famous for its tamales and Memphis style pork BBQ.Also has southern style delta food.A dumpy place but good food.
