Factory tours

Eric Rasmusen recommends factory tours. Along related lines, four of my favorite global sites are Gary, Indiana, the Ruhrgebiet near Duisburg, Germany, the harbor in Rotterdam (yes you can take a tour), and of course the view from the Pulaski Skyway. I call it "industrial beauty." And to think they asked me on New Zealand television whether New Jersey has more than one culture...

Chicago) across the Indiana Toll Road and the
Chicago Skyway. Both the Gary Works (US Steel)
and the BP refinery are truly beautiful
sights, with the flare of the burn-off in the

I live in NJ (north NJ - not far from Rt 17) and grew up in south NJ near Philly. God knows how many microcultures there are in NJ. It's incredible how many distinctly different zones there are in NJ.

Yes, the industrial can be breathtaking. I may never again see a sight so achingly beautiful as sunset on the polyethylene plant on Chocolat Bayou, TX. For those who haven't been able to see this aesthetic themselves I highly recommend Canadian photographer Edward Burtynksy. ( http://www.edwardburtynsky.com/ , click on "works" ) He is famous for his "ship breaking" series, but his mine tailings and cargo containers leave me speechless.

My wife and I were wondering at the beauty of the Pulaski Skyway just the other day, as it happens, on our way back from Newark Airport...

I was born and raised in North Jersey and I can attest to at least 15 different cultures throughout the state, five of which is in Jersey City alone. Traveling to South Jersey I often find myself getting out of the car at gas stations to pump my own gas forgetting that I am still in New Jersey. I think New Jersey has more accents than almost all the other 49 states combined (except maybe New York).

Gary, IN at night reminds me of the opening scenes in Blade Runner.

I grew up about 10 minutes south of Gary, near Hammond. In 6th-grade band class we watched The Music Man, which has a song called "Gary, Indiana". The striking contrast of what Gary must have been at the time the song was written, and what Gary was in the late 80's (highest or 2nd-highest per capita murder rate in the US, I believe) made us all laugh.

For two and a half years while I was an intern and an undergrad I worked at the General Motors Corvette Assembly plant. Part of our duties as interns was of course to lead the plant tours there.

I assure you, between the fervent fans, UAW rules, fascinating events, and working there during the 50th anniversary of the classic American sports car, this expereience should have merited a blog unto itself.

I highly recommend the tour if you are near Bowling Green, KY.

Always take the Skyway. Its about $3.50 in tolls from the end of I-65, but it will save you lots of time in traffic on 80/94. Further, the construction is done and it is in great shape.

The Indiana Toll Road and the Skyway rule! In addition to the industrial sights already mentioned, there's the South Shore Line (mainland North America's last interurban railway) on the south side of the Toll Road, the State Line power station at the State Line, and assorted shipping under the Skyway itself. Use your imagination in the afternoon and envision the Twentieth Century Limited racing the Broadway Limited on the tracks to the north of the Skyway.
